Ko
Chang's Population
The majority of the almost 5000 island
inhabitants live off the
cultivation of coconut, rubber production, fishing
or off the yield of shrimp farms. Meanwhile more
and more island inhabitants find work in the expanding
tourism industry. Visitors
The first Farang (foreigner)
arrived on Ko
Chang in 1987. In the year
1998 already over 70,000 holidaymakers visited
the island and in 2007 almost 685.000 visitors
came - and the number is rising continuously.

Particularly because of the improvement
of the infrastructure and increasingly more comfortable
accommodations. Also the proximity to Pattaya
(3 - 4 hours by bus to Trat) and Bangkok
(5 - 6 hours) attracts additional visitors to
the island.
At the weekends, public holidays and vacations
many Thais
come from Bangkok
and the closer vicinity for a short stay to Ko
Chang, so that almost two
third of all yearly visitors are Thai
people. However the number
of foreign visitors is increasing quicker compared
to the number of Thais which regressed 2007 for
the first time compared to the preceding year.
The number of foreign guests rose 2007 for about
25 % compared to 2006 while the number of Thai
visitors declined a little bit more than 2 %.

The average duration of stopover
of the non-Thai holidaymakers amounted to 4 days
in 2007 while the Thai visitors spent only about
2 days on Ko Chang. (Source:

Travelling-Time & Weather on Ko Chang
Ko Chang,
like the rest of Thailand,
has 2 seasons. The rainy
season here lasts from May
until October, the dry
season from November until
April. Dry season can be divided into 2 periods:
the cold time between November and January and
the hot time from February until April. Most visitors
are on the island between December and March,
this is also the best time for a stay, since the
temperatures rarely exceed over 30° Celsius.
In November and December it can become occasionally
quite cool because of the wind in the evening
and at night. |
After the monsoon
in winter, the water level is considerably higher
than in summer - as you can see at the picture
on the right hand (Kai Bae Beach). The picture
to the left was shot in December 2001 the picture
to the right in May 2004.
The month with the most rainfall is August with
an average 700 mm of rain per square metre.

Only a few hotels
and bungalow
resorts close during the
monsoon season, most of the resorts are open all
year round.
Those who are looking for peace and solitude will
not regret visiting the island during rainy season.
There are also sunny days and usually it doesn't
rain every day or all day long, quite often only
at night time. The panorama picture on the right
(Lonely Beach) was taken at July the 21st 2008. |

Hotel-Situation
on Ko Chang, Ko Mak, Ko Kood, Ko Rayang and the
closer islands
Because Ko Chang
& the near islands
are so close to Bangkok
a lot more Thais
come to the islands
as in other tourism-centres
of Thailand. The season
on Ko Chang and the surrounding
islands
lasts longer than on the other islands
in Thailand. During the high
peak season, particularly
Thai public-holidays, long weekends or during
the European and Thai
vacation times, shortages
in accommodations
may occur. It may pay to book in advance to avoid
inconveniences or prepare yourself for a night
at the beach,
in the restaurant or in the hammock.
In 2006 and 2007 almost all of our resorts were
already full in October for the time around Christmas
and New Year!
Especially if you want to come
to Ko Chang,
Ko Mak, Ko Kood, Ko Rayang
or the closer islands between December the 20th
to January the 10th, at Chinese New Year (at black-moon
between the 21st of January and the 19th of February)
and April the 13th to 15th (Songkran - Thai New
Year), you should do your reservations
months in advance - these times of the year the
resorts
on the islands
are mostly full! |
